Shrooms
What Do Shrooms Feel Like?
Shrooms, also known as magic or psychedelic mushrooms, are natural hallucinogens. Many people ingest them recreationally to experience an altered sense of reality that can lead to giddiness and a fun experience. They are even known to have medicinal benefits that can help relieve cluster headaches and psychological symptoms like depression.
However, shrooms are not without their own drawbacks. They can cause bad trips and physical ailments, as well as exacerbate mental health issues. That’s why it’s important to do your research and get the low-down on magic mushrooms before deciding to take them.
What Is It Like To Take Magic Mushrooms?
Shrooms can be taken in a few ways. Sometimes they are eaten raw, but most commonly, they are dried out to be stored long-term. Dried psychedelic mushrooms can be eaten whole or mixed in with other food that can mask the taste. Making tea out of shrooms is also a popular method of consumption. It’s also possible to extract a liquid form of psilocybin, the chemical that makes these mushrooms “magic.”
Once you’ve taken your shrooms, you can expect some assortment of symptoms that range from new and distorted perceptions to more physical side effects. In general, the feelings that psychedelic mushrooms induce are positive. Most people become excitable, happy, and more enamoured with the world around them, if not entirely euphoric. The effects are commonly compared with products like those you’d find on websites like Prisms LSD.
Shrooms can have some adverse effects as well, however. Some people undergo negative mood changes that can make them feel increased stress, anxiety, or feelings of paranoia and suspicion. Magic mushrooms also may lead to nausea and could even cause you to throw up.
Although shrooms are considered to be a hallucinogen, not everyone who eats them will experience overt psychedelic effects. When hallucinations do occur, they are typically visual in nature and are relatively mild. However, sensory experiences are usually altered. Most people will find that they hear and see things in a slightly different way after they take magic mushrooms.
When Does Psilocybin Kick In?
The effects of potent magic mushrooms usually start to work within a half hour of consumption. In fact, you may start to notice visual changes as soon as fifteen minutes after you ingest shrooms. However, sometimes, it can take a bit longer (approximately 45 minutes or so) for you to begin feeling them.
Therefore, if you don’t notice any changes, it’s a good idea to wait about an hour before you take more mushrooms. Otherwise, you could take a dose that’s too high for you, which can lead to a bad and overwhelming trip.
How Strong Are Shrooms And How Long Do They Last?
The duration of magic mushrooms will vary depending on a few different factors. For instance, a higher dosage may lead to a more extended or extreme trip. But in general, shrooms may affect you for around 6 hours after you’ve ingested them. That being said, the intensity of the high will usually start to decline around the 3-4 hour mark.
As far as the strength of shrooms goes, there are numerous potential determinants. The potency of the psychedelic mushroom that you have ingested, as well as the quantity you consume, will obviously impact how dramatic the effects are. You may also find that your previous experience with drugs, especially psilocybin, is also going to impact this too. For instance, if you regularly take shrooms, you may develop a tolerance. This means that eventually, you’ll have to start taking more mushrooms to receive the same results.
How old you are, your height and weight, and what food you’ve eaten earlier that day are all physiological influences on your shrooms experience. Additionally, you might find that your expectations, mood, mental health, and nature all can impact what your trip is like. A positive attitude typically leads to a better trip.
What Are The Risks of Consuming Psychedelic Mushrooms?
Often, shrooms can be safer to try than other drugs. However, that does not mean that there are no risks to consider at all. Magic mushrooms can have effects on both your body and mind that are highly unpleasant, if not overly dangerous.
In terms of physical symptoms, consuming psychedelic mushrooms most often leads to stomach discomfort. Psilocybin users frequently become nauseous after eating shrooms, which can lead to dizziness or vomiting. An upset stomach is also not uncommon.
The psychological impact of a hallucinogen, like shrooms, can also be dramatic and intense. If you have preexisting mental health issues, it’s usually a good idea to avoid this type of drug because it can make them worse. Even if you do not have these concerns, magic mushrooms can lead to bad trips that are scary and unnerving.
Furthermore, as shrooms can distort your perception of reality and cause hallucinations, it’s possible for them to put you in situational danger. People who take psychedelic drugs can exhibit uncharacteristic behaviour or have trouble navigating situations safely. This can be very dangerous, so it’s always best to trip somewhere safe with someone sober watching over you.
One final thing to note is that magic mushrooms can be dangerous because they resemble many poisonous mushrooms. While consuming shrooms does not typically result in physical effects beyond a stomach ache, it’s easy to take the wrong type of mushroom, which can have serious complications, including death. This is especially true if you are harvesting your own mushrooms and are inexperienced.
In Review
Shrooms can create a very positive hallucinatory trip or just a mildly pleasant sensory experience. They’re not typically physically dangerous, though they can cause some temporary gastrointestinal discomfort. However, a bad trip is always possible, which can be psychologically damaging, and there are always some risks associated with taking any drug.
